How to Draft Proof Your Home

The winter season is upon us, and while Vancouver Island might not get as much snow as other parts of Canada, we’re still susceptible to dramatic weather shifts. During the colder months of the year, your windows and other structures around your house can let cool air from the outside into your toasty warm home. Not only can this be uncomfortable for those in your home, it can also cost you more money in heating bills.

Luckily, there are things you can do to draft-proof and winterize your home to get ahead of the cold weather and keep it outside where it belongs!

1. Fill in the Gaps

Over time, your baseboards can develop gaps around them if the caulking or weather-stripping is damage or wearing away. Baseboards, as well as sump-pump lids or attic openings, can also benefit from re-caulking or weather-stripping to prevent leaks and keep your home warm. While you’re at it, check your doors and windows for gaps around the frames that might be etting drafts in.

2. Install a Door Sweep

When you add a door sweep to the bottom of your door, it adds an additional seal when your door is closed so air can’t get in or out. These are inexpensive and easy to install and can make a big difference in draft-proofing your home.

3. Cover Electrical Outlets

It may seem like a minor detail, but little steps can add up to a big difference in keeping your home warm. If you have electrical outlets around your house that are rarely used, fit them with child safety plugs to stop cold air from getting in through those spaces.

4. Interior Window Coverings

Interior window coverings help stop the flow of cold air around your windows much in the same way a scarf keeps your neck warm. These coverings act as a form of insulation that works year-round, and they can also keep your home cool in the summer.

5. Replace Damaged or Inefficient Windows

You may be losing the battle of draft-proofing your home if your windows are damaged or inefficient. Cold air might be coming in faster than you can keep it out, and that could mean it’s time to get new windows! If that sounds like your home, contact Complete Windows to begin the process.
